About Dr. Steve Mehta
Dr. Steven Mehta grew up in Ohio, to first generation immigrant parents. From an early age, the American Dream was instilled in him – work hard, be a good citizen, and reap the rewards…a simple but effective concept that has propelled the United States to greatness over the past 200 years.
After graduating with Honors from the Kent State University, he earned his Medical Degree from the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine at the age of 22. To this day, he remains one of the youngest medical school graduates in the United States. This same drive to excel led Dr. Mehta to travel to China to teach their cardiologists advanced cardiac procedures. While there in 1992, he performed the first coronary laser angioplasty in that country.
Except for two years as the Director of Cardiovascular Intervention in Rancho Mirage, CA, Dr. Mehta has resided in Arizona since 1990. He permanently relocated to District 1 in 1999, to improve rural access to cardiac care and develop the cardiovascular program at the Summit Healthcare (formerly Navapache) Regional Medical Center, in Show Low, AZ. He planned, developed, and operated the Heart Center of Northeastern Arizona, one of the first rural programs of its kind in the US. Since 2003, the Heart Center has provided advanced cardiac procedures for thousands of residents of the White Mountain communities. As the Arizona Governor of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Mehta regularly travels to Washington, DC to help legislators understand the intricacies of the healthcare system. He was instrumental in the defeat of poorly crafted healthcare legislation in the Arizona Legislature, and remains a fierce advocate of patient access to medical care.
Dr. Mehta received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee to deepen his understanding of the complexities of running a small business. His entrepreneurial spirit and concern for the healthcare of the underprivileged resulted in a seat on the Board of Directors at the Navapache Regional Medical Center, as well as on the Board of the White Mountain Chapter of the American Heart Association. His wife also shares his spirit of national and civic pride. A physician’s assistant and honorably discharged Captain in the US Army Reserves, Lisa spent 1½ years in Afghanistan directing a battalion aide station. Since her return, she remains active in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Arizona, Meals on Wheels, and the Humane Society.
Through his involvement with the American Foreign Policy Council, Dr. Mehta was a member of a delegation to China in 2005, led by the former Secretary of Homeland Security and Governor of Pennsylvania, the Honorable Tom Ridge. During that trip, Dr. Mehta participated in discussions on issues of global importance, such as international economics, the stability of East Asia and North Korea, and intellectual property rights.
As a physician, Dr. Mehta will provide strong leadership as sound healthcare policy is crafted. As a small businessman, he understands how excessive taxation and government intrusion stifles economic growth and limits jobs. As a firm believer in the American Dream, he opposes large government and its infringement on entrepreneurship and personal liberties.
As your United States Congressman, Dr. Steve Mehta will work tirelessly to defend the Constitution, restore the balance and fiscal responsibility of government, and maintain America’s honor, security, and standing in the world.
